We are pleased to announce the launch of a new project “Promoting Ukraine’s transition to green energy” conducted with the support of the European Union and the International Renaissance Foundation within the framework of the EU4USociety project.

Relevance of the project
Ukraine does not stay away from the global challenges of humanity, in particular the problems of climate change and adaptation to these changes. The country is a party to the Paris Climate Agreement and has already expressed its intention to implement the principles of the European Green Deal, in particular, the concept of “green” energy transition of Ukraine until 2050 was presented. Energy production is the main source of anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions in the world, and therefore to the introduction of renewable energy sources (RES), energy efficiency and energy conservation should be given a key role.

Recently, there has been a threatening trend in Ukraine to break the link between “green” renewable energy, environmental protection and sustainable development. Incentives that have been introduced to support the development of RES (in particular, “green” tariffs), unfortunately, have gained a negative image in society – “as a way to enrich oligarchic groups” and were revised in 2020 to reduce.

Combating climate change, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and implementing RES must have a public demand that will make it impossible for Ukraine to abandon the green course, and therefore the main task of the project should be to prepare the ground for such a demand.

The green energy transition is, above all, an incentive for modernization, economic development and investment, and the undeniable benefits of its implementation should be known to a wide range of stakeholders.
That is why the project aims to reproduce the positive image of RES in Ukraine.

Activities within the project
To create a public demand for Ukraine’s green energy transition, the project will run an extensive outreach and advocacy campaign to raise awareness of national and local authorities, relevant stakeholders and the general public about the need and benefits of Ukraine’s transition to green energy in the light of European green course.

An important component of such activities is to draw the attention of the target audience to the fact that the transition to green energy in Ukraine can significantly contribute to the recovery of the national economy affected by COVID-19, as well as focus on opportunities for energy independence by communities.

The components of informational, educational and advocacy activities will be:

  • Conducting six online seminars for a wide range of stakeholders;
  • Preparation of a printed version of the brochure “Benefits of the green energy course for local communities”;
  • Holding a round table “Green Energy Transition of Ukraine as a component of the fight against climate change” in the framework of the international conference “Biomass Energy-2021”.

Expected results of the project

  • Improved image of renewable energy in Ukrainian society;
  • Positive perception of the transition groups and stakeholders of the transition to green energy in Ukraine;
  • Raising awareness and understanding of the need and benefits of Ukraine’s transition to green energy by the general public in the light of the European Green Course.
