Analysis of ways to increase the share of renewable energy use in the heat supply sector of Ukraine

Ukraine has great potential for implementing biomass boilers, CHPs and TPPs for industry, commercial consumers and the population. The primary sources of biomass in Ukraine are forestry and agriculture. Ukraine has large forested areas in the west and north of the country near the border with Belarus, Poland, and Romania and large areas of agricultural land in the central and southern part of the country, which is part of the Pontic Caspian steppe.

One of the largest potential markets for the implementation of bioenergy projects is the district heating sector, which was the focus of the project “Analysis of ways to increase the use of renewable energy in the heating sector of Ukraine”, which was carried out in July 2017 – May 2018. The project results are intended for the Danish Energy Agency and the Ukrainian-Danish Energy Center.

The following tasks were performed in the project:

1. Preparation of the Manual on modern district heating systems (DH) using renewable energy sources (RES).
2. Preparation of a technical catalogue on renewable energy sources.
3. Development of forecasts and scenarios for the production of thermal energy (TE) from RES until 2035.
4. Identification of the most significant barriers to investments in the heat supply sector using RES. Development of recommendations for overcoming barriers.
5. Development of a financial model for the construction of a new biomass CHP plant with a capacity of 5-20 MWe.
6. Creation of the market for fuel biomass in Ukraine.
7. Analysis of the waste incineration option for district heating needs.
8. Carrying out technical and economic feasibility studies of individual investment projects for the production of energy from biomass.
